5 a.m. Stream of Consciousness

It’s just after 5 in the morning, and I’m wide awake and sick. I’ve been whittling away the time sipping Neo Citran and fooling around on my beloved iMac G5. I don’t feel perfectly coherent but I do feel like writing, so instead of attempting some indepth essay on any one topic, I think I’ll settle for an offering of “snippets” about what’s been on my mind lately. Perhaps one or more of them will become full entries some day…

• I am truly loving life (except for being sick at the moment). Marriage is great. I hear that the first year is the hardest on couples, and if that’s the case then things are looking very solid. Lisette and I have managed to squeeze our lives together into a 527-square-foot condo quite well, and legitimate sex is way cool.
• It’s wonderful to live within walking distance of work and everything else I need. The big city of Vancouver feels like a little village to me since I rarely require motorised transportation. Surrounded by a density of people all the time, I now know what it means to live in a community.
• Speaking of motorised transportation, I am increasingly concerned with our society’s reliance upon limited natural resources—primarily, oil. I don’t want to sound like a doomsayer, but it appears our economic infrastructure will not last much longer at the current pace of growth and consumption. What does this mean for the future of heavily industrialised nations like Canada and the United States? Only God knows. In the meantime, I encourage you to check out a documentary called The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream if you can find it. There are various other sites dealing with the same subject. Alarming stuff.
• Why do so few Christians seem to care so little about preserving God’s creation? Specifically, why don’t they recycle?
• iPod nano is a beautiful thing.
• Homosexuality and Christianity have swapped places in our culture: one used to be taboo and socially discouraged, the other used to be widely accepted and socially encouraged. (Yet oddly enough, racism is still holding fast.)
• I never thought I’d go into sales, but it appears to suit me just fine.
• There is far too much discussion on the “postmodern” or “emergent” church these days. No offense to my blogging friends, but sometimes I wish people would just shut up and live.
• Swearing can be damned effective if used sparingly.

Now that I’ve offended just about everybody, I’ll go back to watching my pirated documentaries. Good morning.
